Journalist. Press Secretary for Gov. Edmund G. (Pat) Brown, 1961-1967. Previously a journalist for the Hawaii bureau of United Press, the Honolulu Advertiser, and the San Francisco Chronicle, Burby went on to edit and publish the National Journal (Washington, D.C.) from 1970 to 1974. In 1978, he became a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times and, in 1983, was named as assistant editor of the editorial pages.
